THE ANALYSIS OF CODE-MIXING AND CODE-SWITCHING IN ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Code-mixing is a phenomenon when someone mixes two or more languages in the same sentence, while code-switching leads to switching from one language to another in the same utterances. This research examines code-mixing and code-switching during English teaching and learning process at the Mathematics Education Department of Universitas Bhinneka PGRI. The aim of this research was to know the implementation, common types, and students’ perception regarding code-mixing and code switching during English teaching and learning process. This research uses qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from 20 mathematics education 8th semester students through observations, questionnaires, and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed based on Hoffman's code-mixing theory and Poplack's code-switching theory. The findings of this research indicate that code-mixing and code-switching can be implemented into teaching and learning process in English classes, especially when explaining material, providing information, instructions, and interaction with students. During the process, several types of code-mixing and code-switching discovered, the two most commonly used were intra-sentential code-mixing and inter-sentential code-switching. Studentss’ perception on the use of code-mixing and code-switching were positive. The students felt the strategy was helpful to understand the material, gained new vovabulary, more comfortable and confident, and highly motivated to learn English further.
